David Smith ranks among England's most famous contemporary artists, a realist distinguished for his atmospheric, richly detailed landscapes. Born in Essex, David Smith left school at the age of 15. He spent the next few years in various occupationsuntil finally training to be a bricklayer. His grandfather, a keen amateur artist, encouraged him to paint from an early age, but it remained just spare time activity until 1978 when Smith decided to make painting his full time career.
The artist's mastery of light and color in his tranquil paintings of English landscapes, which so clearly echo his love of the countryside, attract great admiration from all who view and collect his work. He has rapidly become one of the leading landscape artist in Great Britain, Europe, Bermuda, Australia and the United States of America.
